A Brief Case of Crazy | Storyhouse Chester

What an absolutely brilliant show at Storyhouse - A Brief Case of Crazy is a masterclass in physical theatre: slick, clever, balletic and gloriously inventive.
From Skedaddle Theatre (in association with York Theatre Royal and Shoddy Productions) the three actors are exceptional, displaying astonishing physical precision, impeccable comic timing and a chemistry that makes the whole production fizz with energy. There is a real sense of trust between them, allowing every movement, interaction and perfectly timed moment of physical comedy to flow effortlessly. What looks spontaneous is clearly the result of extraordinary skill, discipline and rehearsal.
The clever use of sound is a triumph, adding layers of humour, atmosphere and drama, while the pop-art-inspired set is used with remarkable creativity and ingenuity. Every prop, sound effect and movement has a purpose, demonstrating just how much can be achieved through imagination, ingenuity and sheer theatrical talent rather than elaborate staging or special effects.

There is something quite mesmerising about watching physical theatre performed this well. The choreography is balletic in its precision, yet never loses its comic edge. The storytelling is wonderfully expressive, proving that sometimes the smallest gesture or perfectly judged look can say more than a page of dialogue.
Funny, inventive, beautifully choreographed and utterly absorbing, this is theatre that reminds you why live performance is so special. A hugely talented trio, a brilliantly conceived production and an evening that left me thoroughly impressed.
