At the end of a wildly exciting and successful 2025 season, NYMT have announced their even more ambitious 2026 programme, working to extend their reach even more across the UK and further establishing themselves at their new home in Birmingham.
Since beginning their journey 50 years ago, NYMT have aspired to bring the best opportunities to young performers, encouraging growth and collaboration in the process of creating theatre. For the next year, they’re continuing to dream big and promising an exciting year of youth theatre and brilliant opportunities. This year, they will be taking on Bernstein’s West Side Story and Drewe and Stiles’ Just So, alongside a new musical developed specifically with and for their young company that has already begun its journey with NYMT this year - Every Day by Nick Barstow and Martha Geelan. They will also continue to workshop other new musicals, some now in their second year in development with the charity.
With the support of partners old and new, next year's productions will take place at the Birmingham Hippodrome, as part of the drive to increase access to the arts to the diverse populace of the city. Alongside this, many new partnerships have been officialised for their next chapter, including teaming up with the Stephen Sondheim Society to co-produce West Side Story and reaching out to involve Hispanic communities across the UK with the production, and working with other partners to guarantee an increase in bursaries available to those facing financial barriers to take part in the arts.
All of this ties in to the three core values that NYMT represent - Invention, Encouraging Innovation and Creativity, Industry, Working with Industry Professionals to Meet High Standards and Inclusion, something that is clear that the group have a firm understanding of
and are constantly striving to push further through asking what inclusion really means.
Alumni and young company members all lovingly refer to the connections they make at NYMT as being part of a family, and those bonds brought an electric energy to the gathering that made the feeling of inclusion palpable.
As well as all these announcements, the final performance of the 2025 season took place by the Platform company. A group of the most experienced young company members ready to take the leap into the industry, Platform takes us on an indulgent journey through the last 50 years presented by the current generation of NYMT, and next generation of industry talent.
Showing mass amounts of promise, the whole company's personalities shine and reflect off one another exactly as they’ve been described - like a family. The show was a heartfelt reflection of the past for both the charity and company, as they re-lived growing up together, before facing contemplations of the future ahead of them. It is exciting to consider what this group of performers are heading for as they embark on their next steps, but there is no doubt that they all hold more than enough potential to carry them onto great things.
Alongside this talented group was a young actor different to the rest - 10 year old Isaac made his debut with NYMT through Platform, boldly representing the youngest generation taking their first steps into this world, and showing the future of the charity itself in his performance.
After an impressive 50 years, NYMT are geared up to continue providing outstanding opportunities for talented young performers, providing access to the arts on a truly national scale that allows young people to be involved in every aspect of musical theatre. With creation and inclusion as their driving force, the next 50 years are filled with promise for more innovation and boundaries being pushed, led by the progression of generations of theatre-makers and performers to come.
