Here Comes J. Edgar | King's Head Theatre

Making its world premiere at the King's Head Theatre, Here Comes J. Edgar! is a hilariously daft musical comedy that takes one of America's most controversial historical figures and turns his story into an outrageous, tongue in cheek celebration of theatrical excess. Blending political satire with larger than life musical numbers, the show explores the extraordinary life of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, the power he held over others and the carefully guarded secrets of his own private life. It's a story about ambition, control, identity and love, but one that never takes itself too seriously.

From the moment the curtain rises, it's clear this production knows exactly what it wants to be. It fully embraces the style of a classic Golden Age musical, complete with knowingly cheesy choreography, witty lyrics and plenty of theatrical nods to beloved show tunes. Bill Deamer's choreography is wonderfully old fashioned in the best possible way, capturing the glitz and glamour of 1950s musical theatre while adding just enough humour to keep audiences laughing throughout. Every dance break feels like a loving tribute to the musicals that inspired it.

Leading the company is Bryan Batt as J. Edgar Hoover, and honestly, it's difficult to imagine anyone better suited to the role. Batt delivers a performance that is equal parts commanding, ridiculous and utterly captivating. His impeccable comic timing keeps the audience laughing, while his larger-than-life portrayal never loses sight of the humanity beneath Hoover's carefully crafted public image. It's a performance bursting with charisma and he effortlessly carries the show from start to finish.

Hugo Bolton is equally impressive as Clyde Tolson, Hoover's loyal deputy and closest companion. Bolton provides many of the evening's funniest moments with his brilliantly understated comedy, but he also brings genuine warmth and tenderness to the relationship at the heart of the story. Bolton's chemistry with Batt is fantastic, giving the musical an emotional anchor amongst all of its wonderfully outrageous antics.

One of the evening's biggest scene-stealers is Laura Medforth as Hoover's secretary. Her standout solo number is an absolute showstopper. It is hilariously inappropriate, outrageously funny and delivered with infectious confidence. It's one of those songs that has the audience roaring with laughter.

The ensemble deserves enormous praise too. With many of the cast taking on multiple roles throughout the evening, there isn't a moment where the energy drops. Characters transform before your eyes and each performer throws themselves wholeheartedly into every scene. Their commitment to the comedy is infectious, creating an atmosphere where the audience feels invited to laugh along with every ridiculous twist.

The score perfectly complements the show's nostalgic feel, with musical references that fans of classic Broadway will undoubtedly appreciate. It's clear the creative team have a genuine affection for traditional musical theatre, and that love shines through in every number. The songs feel intentionally theatrical, packed with big harmonies, playful lyrics and plenty of knowing winks to the genre's golden age.

While the comedy is front and centre, Here Comes J. Edgar! also succeeds because it never forgets the human story underneath the spectacle. Beneath the outrageous humour and fabulous costumes lies a surprisingly touching exploration of identity, companionship and the lengths people go to in order to protect themselves. That balance between heartfelt storytelling and unapologetic silliness is what makes the production so enjoyable.

This is exactly the sort of musical that reminds you how much fun live theatre can be. It's bold, camp, clever and completely unafraid to lean into its wonderfully absurd premise. Whether you're there for the comedy, the performances or simply to enjoy a night of joyous escapism, there's something here to leave you smiling.

Hopefully this won't be the last we see of Here Comes J. Edgar! With its infectious energy, memorable performances and crowd pleasing humour, it feels like a production that could easily flourish on a much bigger stage. Here's hoping this hilarious new musical has a long future ahead of it.
