Tony Award-winning star Levi Kreis is lifting the veil to his life in his first original musical Already Perfect, showcasing the trails and turmoils of his youth, growing up gay in the religious state of Tennessee.

Director Dave Solomon brings to life Kreis’ vision for the show with perfect execution. Kreis sits in his dressing room on the night that his Broadway show is being filmed, spiralling and ready to end everything. With the help of his sponsor Ben and a touch of theatre magic, he is propelled into the past, face to face with Matthew, who is prepared to help Levi through the hardest years of his life.

Kreis' book, music and lyrics fully form a soundtrack to his life. Kreis has put together a poetic rendition, diving deep into religious struggles, self love and identity, creating a show that flows seamlessly and keeps audiences engaged.

Jason Ardizzone-West creates a versatile set. From a Broadway dressing room to Tennessee, a backdrop flips around for the convenience of the scene, and a piano takes up the back corner to tie every moment back to the music. Jason Antone takes care of the costumes with the cast staying in the same primary costume the whole show and changing their outer layers to convey different characters. With the use of hats and shawls, to jerseys and flannels, each character has a significant item of clothing to distinguish them.

Alongside writing the show, Kreis plays a version of himself, rendering a heartbreaking performance. Kreis throws everything he has onto the stage, with a rich, warm, soulful voice that lends beautifully to the songs he’s created. It is obvious that Kreis has put his heart and soul into his performance, while also playing the piano throughout.

With killer vocals and suave dance moves, Killian Thomas Lefevre is Matthew. A troubled memory of Levi’s past, here to help him keep going. Lefevre has the audience in the palm of his hand from his entrance, he’s funny and cheerful while also effortlessly handling Matthew’s dark secrets. Lefevre has a gorgeous voice, which blends with ease with his cast members and he commands the stage effortlessly.

Yiftach ‘Iffy’ Mizrahi plays Levi’s sponsor, Ben. He takes on the bulk of the characters, helping further the story. Mizrahi is versatile, easily able to distinguish each character he plays. He has many funny scenes, carrying a lot of the humour at the beginning of the show. He creates a sinister character that wants the best for everyone.

Small pockets of humour bring a heavy hitting show some light. Each character has moments of surprising laughter with everyone interacting with audience members during the performance. With props falling from the ceiling and Lefevre popping out of a closet, literally, the show has wonderful moments of humour.

The script, however, can sometimes feel uneven in terms of its pacing, being wordy and almost spelt out for the audience, not giving them much to work out themselves.

Already Perfect absolutely touches audiences and is a perfect mix of heartfelt and heart wrenching.

Already Perfect plays at the King's Head Theatre until 15th February 2026.
