The Rocky Horror is a cult-classic comedy musical that has been delighting audiences for over 50 years. It remains a staple in the musical theatre industry for its pure escapism and providing an experience like no other. The Rocky Horror Show is currently embarking on a UK tour and we took the opportunity to speak to Lauren Chia who is starring as Janet to tell us more.
Q) Hello. Before we begin, please could you introduce yourself and the character you play?
Hello! My name is Lauren Chia and I play the role of Janet Weiss in The Rocky Horror Show.
Q) For those who may not be aware, please could you tell us a little bit more about The Rocky Horror Show?
Rocky Horror is a cult classic musical comedy. It revolves around a young couple called Brad, and Janet (who I play). They are both all American, straight laced, and innocent. When their car breaks down they turn up at a castle to seek help. Instead they enter a party where they meet Frank, a ”sweet transvestite,” and their night takes on a journey they never expected.
Q) What is it about this show that piqued your interest and made you want to audition?
For me, the music was a huge selling point. Big rock ‘n’ roll tunes and I love how different it is to any other musical. I was also really interested in the character of Janet and wanted to challenge myself to take on this iconic role. Her eyes are opened into Frank’s world and she has a sexual awakening where she gains confidence and loses her inhibitions. She leaves the show as completely different person so I liked that there was a huge arc in her story.

Q) With the crazy and fun nature of the show, I can imagine the audition process/rehearsal process was a lot of fun. Do you have any highlights from this process?
In the audition, I remember performing the bedroom scene, which was kind of surreal as I was on my own, making rather sexual noises and had no one to act opposite. It was funny at the time but actually now I can see that the creative team probably wanted to see if I could lose my inhibitions.
The creative team were so wonderful to work with in the rehearsals and allowed me to incorporate my own ideas into the character. Although Rocky Horror has a huge cult following, and Janet is such an iconic character, I tried to make Janet my own and not copy actors who have played it previous. I think I share some similarities with Janet so some of the scenes in the show actually come very natural to me.
Q) Do you have a favourite scene/song to perform?
I love performing Eddie’s Teddy, mainly because every person in the cast is onstage all together and it really feels special. I also love the Lab scene because the crazy shoutouts can be so hilarious.
Q) With the show celebrating over 50 years of productions, why do you think Rocky Horror still resonates with audiences just as much as it did back in the time it was written?
The show speaks about being free to be yourself in the motto “Don’t dream it, be it!” It’s a show like no other and there is such a community amongst our regular Rocky fans. You’re free to dress however you like, to sing along and be a part of the show. There is no judgement, everyone is welcome and it still resonates with people of today.

Q) Rocky Horror is a cult classic - what do you think it is about this musical that keeps enticing audiences?
Rocky Horror is an experience and a fabulous night out! There’s amazing music and we all have a party together. Everyone is a part of the show, and it’s one night of the week where you don’t have to follow the social norms or do what is expected of us. You are free to be whoever you want to be.
Q) Speaking of audiences - audience participation is expected at this show. Have you had any memorable or standout audiences/interactions?
My favourite shout out is “When do we return to Transylvania?” NEXT TUESDAY! It’s so random but it gets me everytime. I love that the show is completely different every night! It’s what makes the show so fun and exciting.
Q) Whilst the show is fun and a bit chaotic - are there underlying messages/themes that you
think are important for theatre-goers?
There is some swearing and explicit language used in the call outs amongst the audience, so it might not be ideal for younger children. It also has some sex scenes but it is completely slapstick and hilarious. My parents had never seen the show and when they came to watch they were not expecting to see me rolling around in my underwear! But they absolutely loved the show and the message of Don’t Dream It, Be It.
Q) Why should audiences come along to see The Rocky Horror Show?
You should come watch Rocky Horror because you won’t regret it. Come along, get dressed up, bring your friends. You will be standing up dancing in your seats doing the TimeWarp!
The Rocky Horror Show is currently embarking on a UK tour and will visit the Venue Cymru in Llandudno (North Wales) from 3rd to 8th March.
