Here You Come Again | Alexandra Theatre

Have you ever found yourself in a tricky situation and wondered, “what would Dolly Parton do?” If not, perhaps it’s time you did!

Originating in the United States, Here You Come Again is written by multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy writer and songwriter Bruce Vilanch, alongside Gabriel Barre (who also directs) and writer and actor Tricia Paoluccio (who co-writes and stars as Dolly). It has been adapted for the UK by acclaimed TV and theatre writer Jonathan Harvey (Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and Coronation Street).

Diehard Dolly fan Kevin has moved back in with his parents. His boyfriend has left him, his dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian are floundering, and to top it all off, it's set during the height of the pandemic. Yikes. Enter Dolly Parton, appearing like a beehived, tassel-clad Fairy Godmother, ready to help Kevin navigate life’s challenges using her iconic songs. Audiences can expect to hear all of the greatest tunes including Jolene, 9 to 5, Islands in the Stream, I Will Always Love You and Here You Come Again.

Paul Wills' design transforms the stage into a convincingly cluttered attic, filled with Dolly Parton memorabilia and childhood toys. Set against a backdrop of chimneys, it instantly brought Mary Poppins to mind, and Dolly’s character, with a touch of magic, wasn’t far off from that comparison.

Having played the role in America, Paoluccio reprises Dolly Parton flawlessly. Her mannerisms and voice are spot-on, without ever descending into a tribute act. Aidan Cutler is fantastic as Kevin. His comedic timing and down-to-earth portrayal made the character both relatable and endearing.

Being predominantly a two-hander, there could be concerns that the show may lack the energy of a larger musical. Admittedly, it does feel slightly slow during the second act, particularly during some of the lesser-known songs. However, if audience reaction is anything to go by, then it was clear that the audience had a great time.

Here We Go Again is a show full of heart, reminding us how music has the power to help us through hard times. If you’re a Dolly fan, it’s unmissable.

Here You Come Again runs at The Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham until Saturday, 14th September. Tickets are available here.
