Barbra and Liza Live | Charing Cross Theatre

Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli are back together again and in fine voice at Charing Cross Theatre for a strictly limited engagement, but obviously not in their true form. Instead it falls to the talented duo of Steven Brinberg as Barbra and Rick Skye as Liza to bring these celebrated divas to life and their characterisations certainly didn't "Rain on the Parade" of this audience who got a thoroughly good evening's entertainment.

Now if you were expecting a lavish set, with a sprawling staircase and all the bells and whistles, then you're going to feel short changed here but, the minimalist staging with just a piano, table, comfy chair and a smattering of plants against a black backdrop gives this show a more intimate feel.

To try and encapsulate the essence of these two superstars in a 90 minute performance is no mean feat but Brinberg and Skye are masters of their craft.. Brinberg's portrayal of Streisand is remarkable - emotionally, physically and vocally, however, sometimes it did feel as though he held back from the belting elements of certain songs. He delivers all the classics with such grace and style, particular highlights being a beautiful rendition of Send in the Clowns and People.

Skye expertly delivers Liza with all her chaotic energy and pizzazz, and has a stunning voice. Skye is very playful with his portrayal of Liza and this is particularly shown in choreography of an unexpected, jazzy mash up of Beyonce's classic Single Ladies.

Of course fans of these singers come to hear the classics and they are all beautifully delivered throughout, but it's the more playful mash ups that really gives this show some pizzazz and glitz. There's plenty of humour also with tales from each others lives and this really helps the pace and tone of the show. We were treated to a special guest performance on the night from Chuck Sweeney as Peggy Lee singing her classic Fever which was hilarious. A special mention also to our pianist for the evening Nathan Martin who was marvellous throughout.

There were a few technical issues on the night with sound, which was frustrating for both the audience and the cast with Liza often overpowering Barbra. This meant that the duets didn't really quite hit home as they should have, and you could see that it affected the performers rhythm and flow.

The concept of this show is great and with the above issue sorted, it certainly could elevate the show further, given the undoubted talent possessed by the performers.

The show runs until 17th November and tickets can be purchased here.
